Mary Ellen Hand Whittaker, 86, of Princeton died Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, VA.

Born March 17, 1933 in Helen, WV she was the daughter of the late J. E. Hand and Anna Jane Neely Hand.

Mary formerly worked for her husband’s business Whittaker’s Jewelry in Princeton and also formerly worked at Maidenform in Princeton. She was a member of Johnston Chapel Baptist Church in Princeton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Charles K. Hand; and four sisters, Christine Bland, Madeline Bailey, Faye Fox, and Bettye Bradley. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include her husband of sixty three years, Robert A. “Bob” Whittaker of Princeton; one daughter, Gayle Huffman of Princeton; two grandchildren, Sarah Jane Jones and husband Dale and James Mitchell “Mitch” Huffman all of Princeton; one great grandson, Kole Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Johnston Chapel Baptist Church in Princeton with Dr. John King and Rev. Dan Thyng officiating. Burial will follow at the Whittaker-Dunagan Family Cemetery, Hall’s Ridge Road in Princeton. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 AM until the service hour on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
