John Harris was born 1840, in Georgia (city/county unknown). The 1850 Gilmer County, GA census shows him living in the home of an elderly couple, William & Eleanor Thomas; his relationship with the Thomas' is unclear. William Thomas died before the 1860 census; his widow, Eleanor, moved into the home of daughter & son-in-law, Laten Legg & Eliza (Thomas) Legg. John relocated to the home of his employer, Tilman Cox, whom was related--through marriage--to William/Eleanor's grandson, Leonard Legg. Tilman employed John Harris as a farmhand.

24 July 1862, John married Lucinda Jane "Lindy" Patterson in Fannin County, GA. The 1870 Fairplay, Fannin County, GA census shows the couple living next door to Lucinda's parents, William & Margaret (Hawkins) Patterson. The 1880 census shows John & Lucinda had moved their family to Notala, Cherokee County, NC. By 1881, however, John & Lucinda lived in Gilmer County, Georgia where their daughter, Melanie Nebraska Harris was born, in April.

The 1900 census shows John & his family living in Gilmer County, GA next door to his granddaughter, Maudie (Harris) Cantrell.

29 Sept 1902, Charles Cantrell, Missouri Cantrell, Lucinda Harris, Braskie Harris, John Harris Jr., John Harris Sr., and Clay Harris bought tickets from Dalton, GA to Woodbine, KY. But the agent in Dalton sold them tickets to Woodburn, KY--a considerable distance from their intended destination. The family filed a suit against Southern Railway, seeking $2000.00 in damages (Courier-Journal, Sunday, 13 Sept 1903, p.13). The article stated the parties were all relatives and residents of Simpson County.

The only indication as to whether this particular John was John Harris Jr., or John Harris Sr., is the newspaper article (attached) & the death certificate of Johnce Marion Harris (whom identified his father as John Harris II). Together, these indicate that John Harris--was in fact--John Harris II/John Harris Jr.

Although the 1903 newspaper article shows John Harris relocated to KY, there's no evidence he remained there. No information found on his location & date of death.
