Howard Albert Caldwell, longtime Alaska resident, husband, father and veteran of two wars, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 11, 2013, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. He was 81 years old.
Howard was born Nov. 29, 1931, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Vern Caldwell, a farmer and logger, and Alice Corbin, a registered nurse. He joined the United States Army in 1951 and served in Germany, assisting with the reconstruction effort after World War II.
He met Diane Hobbs on a blind date, and they were married three months later, in January 1953. Howard re-enlisted in 1954, and together, he and Diane spent the next 20 years stationed in Europe and all over the United States, with Howard serving in both the Korean and Vietnam wars.
At his request, Howard's final assignment with the army brought him to Alaska in 1970. After his honorable discharge in 1971, Howard joined the construction of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline along the North Slope and later worked for the Teamsters Union and the Fairbanks North Star School District.
Howard enjoyed telling good stories, and was known for his booming voice. He liked meeting new people and making friends, and loved to fish, hunt, golf and garden in his spare time. Howard and Diane returned to Iowa in the 1990s, where they volunteered with the Red Cross and Shriners Hospital. They also fostered several children during their retirement.
They returned to Alaska in January 2013, but Howard soon fell ill. It is believed he held on long enough to see Diane safely home in Fairbanks with their children.
Howard is survived by his two remaining siblings, Jerry Caldwell and Leanna Whitfeldt; his wife, Diane and their three children, Michael, Kelly and Shawn. Howard and Diane also have seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, with another on the way.
A small memorial service will be held 4 p.m. today, Feb. 15, 2013, at the Fairbanks Funeral Home, 3704 Erickson Ave., in Fairbanks, with Rev. Dave Horning. Family and friends are all welcome to attend.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fairbanks Funeral Home.
