Fred C. Tilden Dies Here After Long Residence
Old Soldier Answers "Taps" at Home of Daughter
Fred C. Tilden, known always as "Uncle Fred" Tilden died at his home here Tuesday, October 10, after residing in Ames for 68 years. He was born in the village of Rochester, Vermont near the Calvin Coolidge place, on November 16, 1846. His father, Julius Tilden, had a gristmill on the White River.
The Civil War called him to the colors when he was 16 years of age, and he saw hard fighting at the Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and other bloody engagements. After the war he returned home to Vermont, attended school and in 1867 came to Delaware County where he took a homestead. In November of 1868 he married Emma Albrook near Manchester and the couple came to Ames in 1870.
His wife died January 24, 1923 and surviving him are Dr. W.C. Tilden of Stanwood, Mrs. E.C. Macy of East Orange, New Jersey, Dr. Julius F. Tilden of Charles City and Mrs. Agnes Tilden Poole of Ames with whom he made his home. The grandchildren are Mrs. Clinton J. Adams and Frederick T. Poole of Ames, M.W. Tilden of Dover, Delaware and Russell Tilden of Stanwood. The great-grandchildren are John Frederick Adams, Bruce Macy Adams and Marna Lynn Adams of Ames and Warren Tilden of Stanwood.
He engaged in fire insurance work, traveling all over Iowa, then entered the drug business in Ames at the site of the present Theis Drug Store. Then he farmed northwest of Ames near Gilbert and then entered business with his nephews L.C. and Galen Tilden and was president of the Tilden Grocery Company from 1917 until 1937.
Mr. Tilden's grandfather, Josiah Tilden, veteran of the Revolutionary War, lived to be 89 and it was the ambition of Mr. Tilden that he reach a more advanced age than his grandfather. Mr. Tilden was a splendid citizen. Public spirited, he had many honors conferred upon him. He served well his day and generation and in Post matters was Commander of Ellsworth Post No. 30 for 20 years. He served on the Soldiers' Relief Commission for 27 years and resigned only a few years ago.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM Friday, October 13, at the Congregational Church with Rev. A.R. McLaughlin in charge. Burial will be in the Ames Cemetery with full military honors with the Daughters of Union Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion participating.
