Lester D. Schmidt, 82, of Fort Dodge, died July 3, 2007 at Trinity Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Gunderson Funeral Chapel. Full military honors will be presented by the VFW Post 1856. Cremation will follow and private interment services will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

Lester D. Schmidt, the son of Fred and Emma (Messner) Schmidt, was born on April 7, 1925 in West Bend, Iowa. He attended school in West Bend. Lester served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946. On Oct. 27, 1948 he was united in marriage to Shirley Wandersee in Sleepy Eye, Minn. The couple moved to Gowrie in 1985 and then to Fort Dodge in 2000. Lester was employed as a roofer for Burwald Roofing Company and worked in construction most of his life. He enjoyed fishing and baseball. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion.

Lester was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Lester is survived by his children, Bradley Schmidt of Gowrie, Brian (Roxanne) Schmidt of Dayton, Brenda (Jack) Bugg of Union City, Tenn., Barry Schmidt of Omaha, Neb. and Brent (Tammy) Schmidt of Coon Rapids, Minn.; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; his siblings, Delbert of Elgin, Ill., Elmer of Lafayette, Minn., Ethel Bednarski of Minneapolis, Eugene of Gaylord, Minn. and Darrell of Winthrop, Minn. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley in 2005, his siblings Eli, Orville, Alvin, Caroline Overson, Merlin, Richard, Kenneth, Arthur, Donald and his parents.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
