Nina Nemo Armstrong was born June 20, 1944 at Camp Forest, TN (near Manchester), and died at Huntsville Hospital Hospice Family Care, Huntsville, AL on August 27, 2019 from complications of ALS. She was surrounded in love by her family and close friends. Visitation will be held at Laughlin Funeral Home on Saturday, August 31 at 9:00 AM, with Service at 10:00 AM with Pastor Steve Parker officiating. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery following the service. Invitation is open to all.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Nemo Armstrong and is survived by her mother, Isabelle Armstrong (101 Yrs. old); brother, Robby Wayne Armstrong; sons, Daniel Phillip Hall, Robby Richard Cheeseman, and Shane Dominic Armstrong; granddaughters, Danielle M. Hall, Kaylynn L. Cooper, Nicole Williams; great-grandchildren, Isabelle Lynn Cooper and Daniel Sawyer Cooper; Nephew, Ashley Armstrong; dearest life friend, Judy Burden; special friends, Sandra Legette and Lynn Smith, and a lifetime of other family, friends, and co-workers.
Nina’s father was a career Army officer, and she referred to herself affectionately as an “Army brat.” For her this meant that wherever her father was stationed was home. There was no permanent “hometown” in her life, but both her parents and all her grandparents were from Madison County, AL. Her father served most of his career, with a few exceptions, at Fort Benning, GA. Nina attended Baker Grammar School, South Columbus School, Baker Middle and High School in Columbus, GA, Ozark City School in Ozark, AL briefly, and graduated from Turner Private High School, Columbus, GA. She moved to Huntsville, AL in 1967 and resided there until her death.
Nina worked at Chesebrough Ponds USA from 1974-1989 as a Sr. lab tech, trainer and manager. After the company closed, she went back to school to finish her education. She earned an Associate of Science degree with honors from Calhoun College in August 1991, and graduated from Athens College in 1993 with a BS in Behavioral Science with highest honors. In 1994, she became a Vista volunteer, and due to her skills and excellent work ethic, she was hired as the Facilities Manager at Hope Place until 1999. She then worked at Crisis Services of North Alabama as their Domestic Violence/Sexual Abuse Services Coordinator and Counselor until she retired at the end of 2007.
She was devoted to and passionate about her family, friends, and her career in social services. She was a member of Big Cove Church of Christ. She loved animals, Alabama football, thrift store shopping, new restaurants, and being with family and friends. Regarding Nina’s professional resume, her last manager wrote the following about Nina: “What it (her resume) doesn’t say is all the important things like what a big heart she had, what a firecracker she was, and that she made a difference in countless lives.”
In her entire life, she was a blessing to those who knew her and loved her, and it was our honor that she touched our lives. We know she is at peace now. The family wishes to thank all of the organizations, the family members and friends that gave Nina medical care, support, and love during her last journey. We will forever be grateful.
In lieu of flowers, you may donate to any of the following charities: Crisis Services of North Alabama, Alzheimer’s Association, or ALS Foundation.
