Mel is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Marcia (Palmer) Wood of Coldwater, MI; four sons, Melvin L. (Tracy) Wood Jr. of Valparaiso, IN, Bryan (AJ) Wood of Union City, MI, Matt Wood of Union City, Andy (Rocky) Hinckley of Battle Creek, MI; Daughter, Kelly (Mark Smith) Wood of Westville, IN; four sisters, Margie (Leroy) Carlson of Chesterton, IN, Mary Reich of Chesterton, Martha (Pete) Suhocke of Missouri, Karen (Scott) Carter of Valparaiso; two brothers, Larry (Stacy) Wood of Dover, FL, Michael (Venus Graves) Wood of Michigan City, IN; eleven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three nephews; one niece; many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by father, Charles L. Wood; mother, Virginia Wood Zumwalt; two sisters, Beverly Miller, Dolly Moss; and one nephew.
Mel attended Chesterton High School and grew up in Chesterton. He was a truck driver and retired in 2013 after over 40 years of service. Mel enjoyed Westerns like 'Gunsmoke' and was an avid Notre Dame and Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and especially spending time with his grandchildren. Mel was known for his woodworking and enjoyed creating special things for his family including cornhole boards and birdhouses.
Funeral Services for Mel will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 8, 2019 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304.
