Son of James Peter McLane and Elizabeth, husband of Margaret Connor, whom he married on August 25, 1870, in Sag Harbor, NY, and father of Mary Ellen "Mamie", Daniel Peter Jr., Rose Anna B., William Joseph, Elizabeth "Lizzie" M. (married Floyd Cavenaugh Mott), and Margaret C. McLane (married Floyd Cavenaugh Mott).

In 1865, Daniel McLane, aged 29, a gardener, was living in Southampton, NY, with his parents, Peter McLane, aged 64, a gardener, and Eliza McLane, aged 64. Also living in the household was his sister, Catherine Sylve, aged 21, his sister, Rose McLane, aged 35, and brother-in-law, Joseph Sylve, aged 28, a seaman, all born in Ireland.

In 1880, Daniel McLane, aged 50, was living in Noyac, Suffolk, NY. Living with him was Ann E. McLane, aged 39. He was shown to be in the fish business.

In 1910, Daniel McLane, aged 78, was living on Roelker Street, Sag Harbor Village, Southampton, NY, with his wife, Margaret McLane, aged 50, and children, Daniel McLane, aged 27, Rose McLane, aged 28, William McLane, aged 22, Elizabeth McLane, aged 20, and Margaret McLane, aged 18. He was shown to be a farmer.
