Raymond Dolen Atherton was born Jan. 14, 1915, in the Hooker, Okla., area, the son of Eula Harold and Norah Lillian Schulze Atherton. He attended school at Eureka School and Panhandle A&M in Goodwell, Okla., receiving his teaching degree.
He taught in Felt and in Hooker from 1942 to 1944. In August 1944, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II.
After his honorable discharge, he returned to Satanta, Kan., where he met Dorothy Bice. They were united in marriage May 7, 1949, in Raton, N.M.
He worked for Mobil Oil for 15 years in the Satanta area. He then returned to teaching and went to Emporia State University and received his master's degree in counseling. He was a counselor for Emporai Middle School and retired in 1983.
Raymond and Dorothy traveled and moved to Loveland in 1990.
He was a member of the Gideon's and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a fixer around the house and loved to read.
Those preceding him in death were his son, Gary; a baby brother and four other brothers: Medford, Dale, Melvin and Lee, and two sisters, Nina Mae and Arlene.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy of the home; two sons, Randy Atherton of Emporia, Kan., and Larry Atherton and his wife Rae of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; daughter, Dianna Buckley and her husband Frank of Corpus Christi, Texas; two brothers, Norbert Atherton of Wichita, Kan., and Wayne Atherton and his wife Debbie of Iola, Kan.; six grandchildren and one great grandson.
Graveside services will be on Friday, July 6, 2007, at 10 a.m. at the Union Center Cemetery near Adams, Okla. Roberts Brothers Funeral Home Inc. in Hooker, Okla., is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the Gideon's and may be sent to Roberts Brothers Funeral Home Inc., Box 745, Hooker, OK 73945.
