Stevens Point - Susan Sparks Griffith, 78, died at home in Stevens Point, WI on April 11, 2018. Susan, the daughter of Leonard A. and Jewell (Thomas) Sparks, was born in Springfield, MO in 1939. She graduated from Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City, OK and continued her education at the University of Oklahoma. There she was awarded one of the first scholarships OU ever gave to a woman and received her BA in French in 1961. At OU, Susan was active and held leadership positions in Chi Omega sorority and French Club and was named Big Woman on Campus. Susan was married to her college sweetheart, Verne, on June 20, 1962 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. Early in their marriage, Susan taught high school French and also authored and taught a French program for 3-8 year olds entitled "Magic Time." Later, she served as a translator of legal French for businesses. Susan first joined the volunteer organization, The Junior League, in 1971 and has been a Sustaining member in five different Leagues over the years. Through the Junior League, she was instrumental in establishing a clinic specializing in physical therapy for Multiple Sclerosis patients and in creating and facilitating a short course on long-range planning, goals and objectives offered to civic organizations around the country. In most of the communities in which she lived, Susan enjoyed participating in La Liaison Francaise, book clubs, bridge clubs and the local Opera Guild. Susan was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church - most recently, Fairmount Avenue United Methodist Church in St. Paul, MN - and a long-time choir soprano.
