Funeral service for Roland Nitschke, 95, of Ashley will be 11:00 am, Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. The Rev. Linda J. Schauer will officiate.

Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Ashley, ND with military honors.

There will be a prayer service at 7:00 pm on Friday with a visitation from 4:00-7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Roland died Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Ashley Nursing Home.

Roland “Big Papa” Nitschke was born on October 17, 1922 northeast of Ashley to Gottlieb C. and Katherina (Heyd) Nitschke. He attended country school and received an 8th grade education. Roland helped with general farm work on his parent’s family farm.

Roland was drafted into the United States Army on April 28, 1945 during the final year of World War II. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class on October 21, 1945. He was stationed at Camp Livingston, Louisiana.

On October 21, 1951 Roland was united in marriage to Goldie Berreth at Forbes, ND. They started their farming operation approximately seven miles northeast of Ashley, growing small grains, raising cattle, milking cows by hand and raising chickens.

He was also one of the World War II veterans to go on the final Roughrider Flight to Washington, DC in May 2011. He was accompanied by his grandson, Dustin, as an escort on this flight. Roland entered Ashley Nursing Home March 2015.

Roland was a member of Gold Star Saddle club and a lifetime member of Ashley American Legion and had served as Chaplain. He was honored for 50 years of being a member on Memorial Day 2017 and was again honored on his 95th birthday in October 2017. Roland enjoyed reading, working on crossword puzzles and word searches. He always had an interest in anything farm related, including watching RFD-TV.

Roland is survived by his wife of 66 years, Goldie; son, Kenneth (Donna) Nitschke of Ashley, daughter, Shirlene (Gary) Roller of Bismarck, ND; three grandchildren, Dustin (Kristi) Nitschke of Coon Rapids, MN, Marcie (Ryan) Brokaw of Forbes and Travis Roller of Bismarck; three great-grandchildren, Trent Brokaw and Avery Brokaw of Forbes and Grady Nitschke of Coon Rapids, MN; and two sisters, Bertha Eszlinger and Elsie Hoffman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.
