Bernita Marie "Bea" (Eggers) Schmalzried, 94, entered Eternal Life on August 15, 2019, at St. Anthony Nursing Center, Lafayette, Indiana, surrounded by family & pastor. Bernita was born February 19, 1925, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Sidona (Klaus) and Emanuel H. Eggers, and baptized March 8, 1925, at Emmaus Lutheran Church. She married Eugene W. Schmalzried on August 14, 1949, in Huntington, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2004 and by grandson Dustin Schmalzried, sisters Frances Shoptaw and Alice Warneck and brother Oliver Eggers.

Bernita graduated from Emmaus Lutheran School & South Side High School in Fort Wayne; she received a bachelor's degree in elementary education at Huntington University and master's degree from the University of Saint Francis.

Mrs. Schmalzried was a beloved elementary educator at Horace Mann School, Central School, and St. Peter Lutheran School, all in Huntington, retiring in 1987; she was a member of The First Mothers Club, Sigma Eta Fine Arts Sorority, MacDowell Music Club, Shakespeare Club, St. Peter Lutheran Quilters, Huntington County Retired Teachers Association, Huntington County Literacy Coalition, and was awarded Outstanding Literacy Volunteer for the State of Indiana in 1994.

She is survived by daughter Nancy (John) Maylath of West Lafayette, with whom she lived for the past four years; son Daniel of Huntington; grandsons Jeremy (Margie) Maylath and their sons Jeremiah and Joseph of West Lafayette, Indiana, and Matthew (Tuyin An) Maylath of Statesboro, Georgia; granddaughters Megan Schmalzried of Hong Kong and Shannon Schmalzried of Michigan; special "daughters" Mae Poon (Joe) of Los Angeles and Josephine Norberg Carlsson (Gunnar) of Stockholm, Sweden; nieces Mary Conner, Faith Deems, Betsy Eggers, Ellen Eggers, Laurie Eggers, Suzanne Oliver and Grace Raguse; nephews Jay Eggers, Lee Schmalzried and Steve Shoptaw.

Bea was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Huntington, Indiana, for the past 75 years and attended University Lutheran Church, West Lafayette, Indiana, for the past 8 years.

The family wishes to thank pastors Jared DeBlieck, Justin Herman, and Timothy Lorenz for their spiritual support.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 24, 10:30 a.m., at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Huntington, Indiana. Preferred memorials are to St. Peter Lutheran Quilters, c/o 605 Polk St., Huntington, Indiana 46750.
