Elizabeth Wattenbarger was born July 16, 1820 in Washington County, Tennessee the first child of Peter Wattenbarger and his wife, Peggy (Sliger) Wattenbarger (Fields family record). She was married around 1838/1840 to a Mr. Carroll whose given name is unknown. He apparently died not long after their marriage. No record of their marriage has been found, but it was as Elizabeth Carroll that she married Dudley Fields in McMinn County, Tennessee on February 10, 1842. She and Dudley Fields had four children: Sarah Jane, Nancy Ann, William Peter, and Lewis Carter.

The family left McMinn County in the 1850s and travelled by covered wagon to the American West where Dudley Fields wanted to work in the Nevada silver mines. Elizabeth died during this westward journey, but her exact date of death is unknown.

Elizabeth's father, Peter Wattenbarger, and her brothers journeyed westward once news of her death reached them in McMinn County and they took custody of her children and brought them back to McMinn County to be raised by their Wattenbarger grandparents. Her four children would inherit a child’s portion of the estate of Peter Wattenbarger, divided into fourths. Elizabeth (Wattenbarger) Fields’ eldest child, Sarah Jane, would recount tales to her own children of travelling westward by covered wagon and then home again to McMinn County.
