Dudley Jeremiah Fields was born December 5, 1819 according to the family record which he recorded. He was the eldest son and first child of William Dudley Fields and his wife, Matilda (Staples) Fields. His paternal grandparents were Jeremiah Fields and Mary (Dudley) Fields and his maternal grandparents were John Staples and Elizabeth (Upshaw) Staples.

Dudley Fields was married February 10, 1842 in McMinn County, Tennessee to a young widow, Mrs. Elizabeth (Wattenbarger) Carroll, the daughter and eldest child of Peter Wattenbarger and his wife, Margaret (Sliger) Wattenbarger. They remained in McMinn County for approximately a decade after their marriage and had four children. In the early 1850s, Dudley Fields and his family left McMinn County and travelled west, to Nevada, where he wanted to work in the silver mines. It was in Nevada or along the way to Nevada that his wife died. Her father, Peter Wattenbarger, upon learning of the news, travelled to retrieve his four grandchildren and brought them back to McMinn County, Tennessee where he and his wife, Margaret (Sliger) Wattenbarger, raised them as though they were their own children.

Dudley Fields remained in the American West. He is not found in the 1860 census. A Dudley Fields is found in the 1870 census enumeration on August 8, 1870 in Pioche City, Nevada, listed as a miner, but is listed as 32 years old and born in Kentucky. It is thought this could be the same Dudley Fields and he may have given a younger age in order to present himself more favorably as a mine worker. The identification of Kentucky as a place of birth would have been a mistake of the census enumerator who must have hurriedly recorded places of birth for a long list of miners. Pioche City had been first settled in 1864 with the opening of a silver mine. This fact coupled with the long-standing tradition that he went to work in Nevada in the silver mines makes it seem likely that the miner from the 1870 census is the same Dudley Fields. No Dudley Fields is found in Nevada in the 1880 census enumeration.

Dudley Fields was residing as early as August 25, 1875 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California when he registered to vote. He was residing in Duarte, Los Angeles County, California on July 9, 1879 when he was registered to vote. He is found in the 1880 census enumeration residing in El Monte, Los Angeles County, California, dated June 17, 1880. He is listed as being 61 years old and born in Tennessee. Shortly thereafter he returned to McMinn County to be cared for by his daughter, Sarah Jane, in what was then deemed his old age, after a rigorous life in mining.
