Betty Jane Mauseau was born on March 12, 1921, in Duluth, Minnesota, the daughter of Walter and Edith (Whitmore) Mauseau. She grew up in Duluth, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati areas, graduating from Hartwell High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. She continued her education at Miami University of Ohio.
On January 17, 1946, Betty was united in marriage to Gordon Jeckell in Cincinnati. They were blessed with two daughters: Susan and Janet. Betty was a city gal who embraced the farm life. She became a farming partner with Gordon and created a warm and comfortable home for their daughters. She loved to read and was well informed on farming techniques as well as local and national current events. They retired in 1985.
Betty kept busy with her handwork (creating afghans for all her grandkids), reading, and putting together jigsaw puzzles. She was an avid baseball and football fan and in her earlier years enjoyed going to square dances. Her family will treasure their special memories of Betty helping all teams with Trivia answers; reading the Wall Street Journal; the cowboy cookies she always had on hand; card games with special friends; and bowling with the Nemaha group.
Betty was baptized as a baby in Duluth, MN, and became an active member of the United Methodist Church attending women's church organizations in Nemaha and Newell. She belonged to the Reading Club, L.N.O. Card Club, and Eastern Star.
Survivors include her daughters: Susan Determan and husband Bill of Early, IA, and Janet Houdeshell and husband LeRoy of Plymouth, MN; four grandchildren: Aaron (Heather) Houdeshell of Maple Grove, MN, Billie Determan of Omaha, NE, Adam Houdeshell and his fiancée Andrea Wellman of Aberdeen, SD, and Barry (Traci) Determan of Des Moines, IA; brother-in-law Earl Cutter of Dayton, OH; sisters-in-law Naomi (Wilbur) Patten of Aurelia, IA, Fernetta (Wayne) Siebrecht of Schaller, IA, and Vivian Keuhn of Trenton, MO; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
