Leora Lynne Webber, 79, of Manhattan, Kan., passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018. She was born April 23, 1939, in Ulysses, Kan., to John Riley “Jay” Wheeler and Eunice LaVeta Layton Wheeler.
Lynne spent her early childhood in Ulysses and Loveland, Colo. She attended high school in Ulysses, where she was a majorette in the marching band. In 1956 she married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Allen Webber, of Ulysses. They celebrated the 59th anniversary of their marriage on Aug. 29, 2015.
Lynne was preceded in death by her husband; a son, David Lawrence; her parents; brother, Arthur Layton Wheeler; and sister, Jaynelle Sue Wheeler Phillips.
Lynne is survived by a son, Duane Webber (Dominika), of McLean, Va.; daughters, Jana Lewis (Don) and Joni Lagerman (Mike), of Salina, and Jari Gittle (Joel), of Manhattan. She also is survived by 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was very proud of each of them and devoted much of her later years to sharing her love with them.
After attending Kansas State University, Lynne was a devoted mother to her children. She served in many capacities for their benefit, including roles with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, PTA, and school organizations. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and her recipes for various delicacies will be enjoyed for years to come. Lynne enjoyed sewing, playing cards, telling stories and interacting with people. She collected Barbie dolls, swans and all things Avon. She delighted in loading up the motor home for a trip to the lake, across the country or in particular to Disney World, a family tradition. A favorite pastime was decorating the house for holidays and other celebrations large and small. She loved to shop for others and had a knack for finding just the right things for most everyone.
Lynne was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, the Asbury Hospital Auxiliary and various other community organizations in Salina. Her church was the First Baptist Church in Salina.
Lynne loved the color purple in all of its forms. She faithfully joined Allen at KSU football and basketball games and other KSU events for more than 50 years and reveled in the opportunities to connect with friends through such activities.
Lynne was an avid supporter of the Salina Silver Sabres Drum and Bugle Corps. She sewed uniforms and flags, prepared meals, tabulated scores, hosted instructors and touched almost every facet of the organization. She derived a special joy seeing her children on the field with the Silver Sabres, and her youngest daughter, Jari, with the Troopers of Casper, Wyo. She remained an avid fan of drum and bugle corps throughout her lifetime.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at First Baptist Church, Salina. Visitation will be Friday, June 15, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina. Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. that day, and the family will receive friends at the mortuary from 5-7 p.m. that evening.
Memorials may be made Kansas State University Marching Band and Pep Band, in care of the mortuary.
