NORMAN — Harry Edward Hicks died Tuesday, July 26, 2011.

Services will be conducted by Grover Ozmun and Noah Brooks and are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cross Pointe Free Will Baptist Church, 2601 24th Ave. SE, Norman.

Harry was born Aug. 25, 1918, in Healdton to Harry F. and Mona B. Hicks . Following the death of his mother when he was six years old, Harry entered the Methodist Home for Children, then located near Britton. His experiences while growing up in an orphanage were expressed in the book he authored, "Mommie What's An Orphan?"

After graduation from Britton High School at age 17, he left the home with $20 in his pocket. Investing all of his money, he enrolled at Central State Teachers College in Edmond where he earned the degree of Bachelor of Industrial Arts Education.

With the outbreak of WWII, Harry enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was assigned to the Amphibious Beach Battalion. He spent 44 months engaged in battles in the South Pacific, including Iwo Jima and Tarawa.

After the war, Harry served several years with the Oklahoma City Public Schools as a teacher and supervisor of adult education before moving to Stillwater, where he worked with the State Department of Vocational Education. In 1965, Harry transferred to the Atlanta, Ga., Public School system. He was the supervisor of vocational education until his retirement in 1982 after 43 years in public education.

Harry will be remembered by his many friends as a proud Oklahoman, a patriot who loved the country he served and a passion for teaching children and helping others.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael E. Hicks ; daughter, Donna L. Hicks ; and two wives, Maxine E. Hicks and Orella M. Hicks .

Harry is survived by a daughter, Sheila Whittle of Mill Valley, Calif.; two stepsons, Ronel Urice of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Joel Urice of Danbury, Conn.; grandchildren Eddie Hicks and Sheri Hill of Oklahoma City; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and dear friends Katie Cole and Carl and Kathy Whittle.

Arrangements are under the direction of the John M. Ireland Funeral Home of Moore.
