Ernest was the son of Gilbert Reagan Igo and Elsa J. Harvey. He, his sister Cecil, and his brothers, John Harvey Igo and Wayne Winfrey Igo were raised in Panhandle, Texas, where, Ernest, as a young man, worked for the railroad and learned how to be a radio and telegraph operator. He moved to Wichita Falls, Texas in 1934 where he met Eva Blanche Robinson and they were married in 1940.

He served in the US Navy from 1935 until 1939 as a radio man, spending most of his time on the USS Philadelphia. In 1940 he began working for the FAA in Columbia, MO and eventually moved to Okla. City in 1957. He retired in 1965 after over 30 years of service. He was a member of Putnam City Baptist Church.

He was survived by his wife, Eva of Oklahoma City; sons, Carl Wayne Igo and Robert Ernest Igo, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Eva was reunited with Ernest on June 23, 2002.

His wife and children wrote the following eulogy for Ernest:
"Although our husband and dad is no longer with us physically he is now, and always will be, with us by what he gave us while he was alive and what he left us even now. He expresse d his great love for his wife and family for always being there and caring when he was needed. By placing the love and care of his family and helping others as the most important things in his life, he has set an example that will live on through his son s and grandchildren he loved so much and all those who loved him and were touched by his life. By knowing what is important in life he was able to mold and change the lives of people he loved. He knew what was most important in life and lived it fully. We all love him dearly and will always remember and try to exemplify his positive spirit in all things and his enthusiasm for life that never stops."

The bio for Ernest and the Igo family photos were provided by his son, Robert Ernest Igo.
