Phyllis Mary Fullmer Barnes, 80, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2003 in Saint George, Utah.
Phyllis was born February 10, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah to William Henry and Mary Chambers Fullmer.
Phyllis grew up on West North Temple Street, "across the viaduct," in Salt Lake City. Her father was an engineer with the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. She graduated from West High School and from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts. She was a very talented artist and enjoyed painting until her decline in health made it impossible for her to continue. Her graduation from the University of Utah was on June 6, 1944 (D-Day). She had two very dear and close friends during her studies at the "U," Ruth Buehner McPhie (deceased), and Jayne Broadbent Malan. This friendship endured through the years.
Phyllis married James Blaine Eustice in 1943. They were later divorced. During their marriage she lived in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. After the divorce, Phyllis and her two children moved to Bountiful, Utah; where she obtained her teaching certificate and taught school at Boulton Elementary.
In 1964 she met and married Lt. Col. Merrill Eldon Barnes in the Salt Lake Temple. He brought much love and happiness into Phyllis' life. They moved to the Washington D.C. area where Merrill was stationed with the U.S. Air Force at the Pentagon. They later moved to Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
Merrill retired from the Air Force and they both taught school in the Southern California area. Phyllis received a Masters of Education degree from Pepperdine University. Merrill and Phyllis retired from teaching so they could indulge their love of traveling. They enjoyed several trips to Europe and the Orient until Merrill's untimely death in 1987. After Merrill's death, Phyllis returned to her hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah to be closer to family, and she enjoyed her beautiful home and many friends on Casto Circle in Holladay.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She especially loved serving in the Los Angeles Temple as an ordinance worker and singing in various ward choirs. In 1998, stricken with Alzheimer's Disease, Phyllis moved to St. George, Utah for the final years of her life.
The family expresses much gratitude to Phyllis' loving caregivers during her years in St. George including the staff at the Meadows Retirement Center, Beehive Homes, Dixie Regional Medical Center, Kolob Care and Rehabilitation and Utah Heritage Hospice.
A Viewing and Memorial Service was held at 1 P.M. on Saturday, August 16, 2003 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive (2000-East) in Holladay, Utah.
Graveside Services followed at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park where she was buried.
