Rayford Ansley was born 13 Jul 1828 in Warren County, Georgia the son of Jesse Ansley and his first wife, Sarah (Stanford) Ansley.

Rayford Ansley was married 3 Feb 1848 in Habersham County, Georgia to Abigail Presley. She died in 1863 while he was serving in the Confederate Army.

Rayford Ansley enlisted as a private in Company G, Infantry Battalion, Smith's Legion, GA Volunteers, 5 Jan 1863. The company became Company G, 65th Regiment GA Infantry in March 1863. He was reported as being absent without leave in 1863, which was probably at the time of his wife's death. He was sick and confined to a hospital from 19 Oct 1863 through 29 Feb 1864. He was paroled at Augusta, Georgia on 19 May 1865.

Rayford Ansley was married 23 Dec 1866 in Towns County, Georgia to Caroline Jackson, the widow of Curtis A. Jackson.

Rayford Ansley and his second wife, Caroline, were enumerated in the 1880 census on 22 Jun 1880 residing in Forsyth Co., GA. They returned to Habersham County in the mid-1880s and were residing there when Rayford Ansley is found on the 1886 tax list.
