Julius Basinski wrote "Reminessences" in 1912 that are preserved in the archives of the University of Oregon Libraries.

Julius was born in Pakoscz, Germany, son of Hyman Basinski and Sarah Hannah Zucker. He came to New York in 1866, where he worked for his uncle Benjamin for four years. Then he was a traveling peddler in Montana, selling cigars and candy. His younger brothers Simon (1850-1933) and Samuel Basinski (1853- ) joined him in operating a store in Bozeman. They were among the first to settle near Yellowstone, opening a pioneer store in Miles City. Their 1882 brick store doubled as an unofficial town bank. Julius married Frances Bruce (1861-1958) in 1884 and the couple had two children in Montana - Alma in 1885 and Bruce in 1888. The extended family moved to Tacoma in 1894, at a time when many Jewish merchants were leaving due to the depressed economy. Julius operated the Tacoma Bazaar, and his brothers sold toys and stationery. His mother-in-law, Isabelle Lyons Bruce, died in Tacoma in 1905. In 1909 the Basinskis took over the Famous Fruit Orchard in Wenatchee, which they operated for a decade before retiring to Portland, Oregon.
