James was the son of Samuel Hoyt, Sr. and Jerusha Judd. He married Rebecca Taylor on Sep. 8, 1773 in Bethel, Connecticut. Their children were Lucy, James Taylor, Abel, Eli, Naomi, and Rebecca, wife of Sherman Judd.

During the Revolution, a family story reports that when the British were burning Danbury, Connecticut, he recognized his brothers Abel and Eli, and stepped into the British ranks to speak with them. He wasn't allowed to return home for three months.

James worked as a weaver, but about 1800, he moved to New York State, where he became a farmer. He died at the age of 79 years.
