Gay was born Nov. 23, 1948, in Bartlesville, Okla. She grew up in Bartlesville and attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla.
She married Scott Matthews in 1968. Gay and Scott lived in Houston and Idaho Falls before coming to Los Alamos.
Gay was a homemaker and supported several church ministries with her sewing, teaching and organizational talents. She was passionate about her family, sewing and a wide variety of handicrafts and arts, and gave of her talents generously for the church, friends and family. She was also a Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout troop leader. While in Idaho, she loved exploring Yellowstone and Teton parks with her family as often as they could.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Scott Matthews of Los Alamos; her son, Jonathan Matthews of Rio Rancho, N.M.; her daughter, Amy Pillay of Williamstown, N.J.; three grandchildren; her mother, Murlene Nickels of Bartlesville; and sisters, Susan Greenwood of Aurora, Colo., Carolyn Wallain of Anderson, Mo., and Marilyn Phoenix of Oklahoma City.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at First Baptist Church of Los Alamos, with a graveside service Thursday, Jan. 26, in Bartlesville.
Arrangements are under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service of Santa Fe, N.M.
