During the morning of June 26, 2007, an enduring source of light dimmed to a close. Jack Gilbert Cornelius Sr., 73, formerly of Rodgers Street in Chesapeake and currently residing in Tyner, N.C., went to be with the Lord. The special joy that Jack would bring to our lives was gone and all we have left are wonderful memories. A native of South Norfolk, he was the son of the late George W. and Mary Crank Cornelius. A retired test board technician with C&P Telephone Company with 30 years of service, he was a member of Southside Baptist Church, Chesapeake, the Telephone Pioneers of America and the American Legion of Edenton, N.C. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He leaves a loving wife of 51 years, Betty, whom he adored and she loved him with all her heart; two children, Jack Gilbert "Gilly" Cornelius Jr. and his wife Becky of Norfolk who considered his dad his "Hero;" Vicki Josue and her husband Joe of Tyner, N.C., who simply referred to him as "My Daddy" because there is no greater bond than the love that ties a father to his little girl; and three grandsons who affectionately referred to him as "PaPaw," Jarrin Ryan Josue and Noel Ryan Josue of Petersburg and Jack G. Cornelius III of Norfolk. He was the sun that rose in their hearts and now that sun has set. Also surviving are a sister, Shirley Phelps and her husband Ralph of Chesapeake; two brothers, William L. Cornelius and his wife Lee of Norfolk and Horace E. Cornelius and his wife Sarah of Virginia Beach; one stepgrandson, Damon Ryan Josue and his wife Carolyn of Fairfax, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. His family loved him very much and ask that you join them in celebrating his life Friday at 11 a.m. in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, with the Rev. Thomas Gregory officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8 p.m. and at the home of his daughter, 412 Wingfield Road, Tyner, N.C., at all other times. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to Hospital Hospitality House of Richmond, 612 E. Marshall St., Richmond, VA 23219.
