Born in the Orwigsburg, New Ringgold area, he was the middle son of the late James W. Rhoades and Maude L. Lutz Rhoades Bright.
He was the loving husband of Jean G. Kubicki Rhoades. They were married July 9, 1955. They were not apart for their anniversary since he retired from the Air Force except for this 61st anniversary. His wife was in the hospital with a cancer scare herself.
Bill graduated high school in 1949 and joined the Air Force in 1950. A decorated serviceman, he retired in 1971 after getting home from Vietnam. His retirement rank was master sergeant.
He played baseball for the Air Force until tearing his left knee ligaments sliding into third base. He then was the flight engineer on many planes, including the C-130. He loved the Air Force and traveling.
Bill loved playing baseball, and when his children were young he coached their baseball and softball teams. He enjoyed watching all sports on TV and shared his mother's love for watching golf.
Bill was all about honesty, integrity, your word is your bond, a handshake seals the deal, and would help anyone who needed it. He even decided to donate a kidney to his brother-in-law. Unfortunately, the transplant center found a blockage in his heart and denied him the privilege of donating the kidney to his brother-in-law, Eddie.
Since being confined to home from surgery four years ago and due to his shortness of breath, his happiness came from visits from grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Robert H., Wallace J. and James H. Rhoades; sisters, Janet Rhoades, Ellen Koch, Ruth R. Seyfert; nephew, Charles Koch.
Bill was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Jean, are a daughter, Patricia Mendizabal, Cocoa; son, Daniel, Orlando; grandchildren, Stephanie Alexander, Orlando, Stephen Alexander, Cocoa, and Veronica Rhoades, Tampa; great-grandchildren, Arthur, Nathaniel and Sydney; brothers, John W., Schuylkill Haven, and Carl T., Orwigsburg; sisters, Alice Shoener, Orwigsburg, Frances Daubenspeck, Pine Grove, and Judith Raffa, Orwigsburg area; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.
Bill wanted his ashes spread in the ocean off of Patrick Air Force Base, Florida. It was his favorite duty station, as he got to be involved with the Mercury and Gemini missions at the beginning of the space age. A memorial service will be held in the Orwigsburg area at a later date
