Our beautiful and loving mother, Louise Carolyn Green, departed this life at age 83 on July 12, 2019, at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.
Louise was born on July 29, 1935, in Newark, Delaware, to Ruth and Marshall Manns. She met her husband, Tom Green, in San Francisco and they were married for 52 years. With their daughters, Moira and Deirdre, they lived in Ireland for 12 years, first residing in Dublin and later in Tipperary. In addition to raising her children, Louise worked as an analyst for Merrill Lynch, ran her own business providing secretarial services, and was employed by Sterling Bank (now Umpqua) in Portland, Oregon, for 17 years, retiring from Sterling as a senior loan analyst.
In retirement, Louise was First Mate to Captain Tom on their 39 Krogen trawler that took them to Alaska, British Columbia and the San Juan Islands. For five years they had ocean adventures and made many boating friends before settling in Lynden. Louise volunteered for the Whatcom Literacy Council and never missed a day walking her Havanese dog, Dexter.
People who knew Louise often commented on her keen intelligence and common sense. She was generous, sweet and kind, but never wanted to be thanked and often acted anonymously. She was an outstanding cook. After preparing thousands of meals, it can’t be said that cooking was her favorite thing to do in later years, but her family was always grateful when the culinary mood struck her. Her husband once overheard a co-worker say to another: “If you ever get invited to the Greens for dinner, cancel everything and go.”
Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Green, and her brother, Marshall Manns.
We are grateful for sharing our life with a wonderful mother who has a beautiful soul. Life will never be the same without her and we will miss her profoundly.
