On Dec. 8, 1927, Francis took his younger son, George, in the car with him, shot the boy in the head and concealed his body in the back seat. He then drove to a long-term care facility where his older son, Frances Stevens, Jr., was residing, spent some time casually visiting with him, then took him to an outdoor location and shot this boy in the head also, before putting the pistol in his own mouth, and committing suicide.
In his effects at the time were detailed letters to family and business associates, a will, and the ashes of an infant daughter who died in 1919.
