Mildred Budd Backus Herron, 94, formerly of Westfield, N.J., passed
away on Thursday, May 9, 2013. Had Been Longtime Resident and
Teacher.
Starting in 1956, she lived for 48 years on Arlington Avenue in a
house that was dear to her, surrounded by wonderful neighbors. For
the past nine years she resided at Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge,
N.J.
Buddie, as she liked to be called, grew up in Natick, Mass. and later
moved to Westfield. She graduated from Westfield High School in 1936
and from Elmira College in 1940. She was a teacher for her entire
career: one year in Berkeley, Calif. during the war; 10 years at St.
Christopher’s School in Mountainside, N.J., and 28 years teaching first
grade at Deerfield and Beechwood schools in Mountainside.
Buddie was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Jarema and Priscilla
Robson. She is survived by her youngest sister, Ruth Shaffer, of
Haddonfield, N.J. Also surviving Buddie are her two children, Kathie
Herron of Pittsburgh, Pa. and David Herron of Medford, N.J., husband of
Mary Herron. She has four grandchildren, Joshua Michael Herron, Jason
Earl Herron, Alexander David Herron and Elizabeth Marie Herron, and one
great-grandchild, Olivia Emilia Herron.
She had a lifelong interest in genealogy, music and reading. She will be
buried in Taunton, Mass. with her parents and grandparents. At her request,
there will be no funeral or memorial service. Donations in her memory should
go to the Old Colony Historical Society, 66 Church Green, Taunton, MA 02780,
