He grew up in Indiana and South Dakota, and earned a mechanical engineering degree from Valparaiso University in 1975. A week after graduation, he married his college sweetheart, Glena. He later received his MBA from the University of Pittsburgh and became a licensed Professional Engineer.
Mark spent 40 years working as an engineer/project manager in the oil and gas industry. The first 24 years were with PDM in Pittsburgh, Pa, and in The Woodlands. Then he finished his career with CB&I in the Houston area until his retirement in 2016. He greatly enjoyed the travel he did with his family and for his job, especially throughout Latin America.
He was a loving father and was close to his daughter. He served in children’s and student ministries while she was growing up in Pennsylvania. In addition, he served in many other ministry areas in his church. After his daughter was grown, Mark loved living near her and her family, and spent much of his time playing with his grandchildren. They especially enjoyed building things, doing projects, and fishing.
In recent years, he continued to share his faith by serving as a third grade Sunday school teacher at WoodsEdge Community Church and also led a weekly Bible study at a local home for the elderly. His faith, his family, his serving, and the people in his life were the most important things to him. He was a caring, loving, devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
In addition to his wife Glena, Mark is survived by his daughter Kelly Phillips (Bill), grandchildren Mark, John, Becca, Ali, David and Kate, brother Jim (Terri), and other nieces and nephews and their families.
