James Lemuel Cohee was the son of Benjamin & Rebecca (Wilson) Cohee. He was born 22 April 1827. He married Nancy J. Sims 17 February 1848 (No record found so far.) This union resulted in three children: Eliza Frances "Fannie" (Cohee)Moran, Benjamin Clark Alexander Cohee, and Charles R Cohee.

Nancy died 17 April 1892. James married a second time on 31 March 1894 to Rachel M Wiley Goldsberry, widow of William Goldsberry.

Rachel's children from her first marriage were: an unnamed infant, Thomas, Elizabeth, and Harriet Goldsberry.

Rachel died on 22 November 1920 and is buried with her first husband William and their daughter Harriet at Pretty Prairie Cemetery in Tippecanoe County. Her headstone has the numbers in the year of her birth reversed. She was born January of 1834, but the stone says 1843.

James Cohee died a few months later on 10 January 1921.


In 1850 Census James is living in Frankfort, Clinton County, Indiana with Nancy and Eliza. His occupation is listed as a Cooper.

In 1860 he is living in Eagle Richland, Wisconsin with Nancy J, Eliza F, and Benjamin Clark Alexander Cohee. He is listed as a farmer.

In 1870 he has returned with his family to Indiana and is living in Wea, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. With him are Nancy, Clark, and Charles. Eliza has married Alexander Moran and is the next family down with a son Harry. James occupation this year is "Selling Machines".


In 1880 James and Nancy are living in Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. His occupation is "Solicitor Dispatch"

In 1900 he is living in Wea, Tippecanoe County,Indiana. With him are his second wife Rachel and his sister Rachel. No occupation is listed.

In 1910 James and Rachel are again living at Wea. Again to occupation is listed.

And finally in 1920 James and Rachel are again living in Wea. They are 94 and 84 years of age.
