BIO CHARLES ANGEL ~ Compiled by B. Bradford-Pytel updated 8-1-2019:
Born: abt. 1730; possibly Providence, Rhode Island or Brunswick, Virginia
Died: abt. 1775*, Sauratown Twp., Surry Co. North Carolina (now Pine Hall, Stokes Co., NC)
Married: Sybella / Sibella [Cummings?? MAIDEN NAME UNPROVEN] sometime before 1748. Have not found a marriage record for them. Also, there is no proof of any second marriage for Charles or Sibella; all 13 children were named in Charles' Will and 11 of 13 in Sibella's .
Parents: unknown but some researchers claim Samuel Angell and Jane Schulenbeck (but I have found no proof or info on these people)
Charles' death date is based on the probate of his Will in May 1776 and the Sale of His Estate May 1777.
Faith: Probably a Quaker based on the marriage of his first born, Mary who joined in matrimony with Joseph Ozburn, son of a prominent Quaker family in neighboring Guilford Co., NC. Quakers had strict rules of marrying within the faith.
Occupation: A "Planter" who owned a large Plantation of over 640 acres with slaves, straddling both sides of the Dan River with Belews Creek (now a lake with the 1972 construction of the dam) running through the property. All 13 children (see below) are named in Charles Angell's Will filed in Surry County on July 17, 1773. This does not mean Charles died on July 17, 1773, but rather he crafted a Will in his 40's (using a birthdate of 1730). His Estate went into probate in May 1776 so I am placing his death in the winter of 1775. In May 1777, the Sale of Estate for Charles Angel's belongings showed a roster of items sold to his children. Three of his daughters, Barbara, Frances and Jemima married "Hansly" (Hensley) men whom I believe were brothers and the sons of Benjamin Hensley and Elizabeth of Henry Co., Virginia. The original Will showed surname "Hansly" for all three daughters giving support to the connection of the men. Several of Charles and Sibella's sons and son-in-laws served in the Revolutionary War. Charles' neighbor was Captain Absalom Bostick for whom his sons, John and Charles, served during the Revolutionary War. Bostick was a wealthy landowner with over a 1000 acres on both sides of the Dan River. This area was Plantation country accessible to the Great Wagon Road allowing for the transport of goods and people. There is no info on the cause of death of Charles and he died a fairly young man leaving Sibella to take care of several children and the Plantation. He was most likely buried on their plantation which is now under water with the creation of the dam.
