John Riley Smith, 87, of the city for many years, died Wednesday morning at 6:30 o'clock at the Home hospital, where he had been a patient for three months.
Born Sept. 16, 1846 in Lafayette, he was the last surviving member of a family of five children born to David and Parmelia (Cole-grove) Smith. He lived in this city until he was 16 years of age when he moved to a farm and for several years was engaged in farming in Tippecanoe and White counties. He later returned to Lafayette for residence and for 35 years was employed as a boilermaker helper at the Monon shops.

In 1868 he was married to Alice G. Hanger; to this union eight children were born. His wife died July 17, 1919 and since that time he had made his home with a son, Oliver VV. Smith, 1440 South street. In addition to the son mentioned he leaves two other sons, Charles W. Smith, of this city, and Frank A. Smith, of Tacoma, two daughters, Mrs. Maude Higman and Mrs. Gertie Lechlitner, both of Lafayette route also 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mr. Smith was a member of Grace U. B. church, also Lafayette Lodge No. 123. F. and A. and Iral Union No. 41J, Boilermakers and Helpers.

The body was removed to the Bradshaw funeral home and will be taken to the son's home on South street Thursday morning where friends may call. Funeral arrangements are awaiting word the son Washington.
