Tarlton Woody is the 2nd child of Greenberry Woody and Margaret Green born in the Grassy Fork area of Cocke Co., Tennessee. He was named after his grandfather who lived nearby in Cocke Co., TN. Tarlton was noted on the 1850 (age 6) and 1860 (age 11) Cocke Co., TN Censuses living with his parents. During the Civil War, he, his father and older brother, Wiley, were recruited by Lt. Col Smith to enlist as Privates for 3 years with Co. D, 2nd NC Mntd Infantry on Oct. 11, 1863 in Knoxville, TN. Tarlton was noted age 17. However all three of their service records showed they were deserters on Nov. 18, 1863, near Bulls Gap and a "no show" for Muster-In and noted AWOL from December 6, 1863, through February 1864. Concurrently the three Woody men also enlisted with Co. M, 1st Tenn Cavalry as Pvts. for 3 years. Greenberry was age 48, Wiley age 20 and Tarlton age 17 when they enlisted on Sept 1, 1863, at Mossy Creek, Tennessee. Capt Huff was the recruiting officer. The descriptions of Greenberry and his 2 sons were inter-mixed when reviewing all their records with both units. My feel is that Tarlton's true description 5-5", blue/grey eyes, light hair and fair complexion. He died on April 19, 1864, from a fever caused by smallpox at Cleveland, TN and we do not know if his body was brought back to Cocke Co. for burial.
