In 1954 he married his childhood sweetheart, Moonyeen Mosley, lso of Braggadocio. They had three children, Renee, Michael, and Reid. James attended college at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and received a Masters Degree in Education at Memphis State.
He was a History teacher, coached basketball, was the principal at the "old" Lee Rood Junior High, and later the Caruthersville High School principal.
James then made a career change, but continued his involvement in the school system by becoming a longterm member of the Caruthersville School Board. The Bruton family has lived and farmed in this county since its inception in the 1860's. In 1868, James followed in their footsteps and became a full-time farmer. He purchased the S. Crews Reynolds Cotton Gin in the early 1970's. In 1980, he brought catfish farming to Southeast Missouri. He continued as a livestock and row crop farmer until his retirement in 2006.
James was skilled in the art of wood carving. During the slower winter months of farming, he enjoyed this life-long hobby.
He was a devout Christian, taught Sunday school and ws a deacon at the First Baptis Church of Caruthersvile where he was a member for over 60 years.
James Shirley Bruton is survived by his children, Reid Bruton, Renee Young, and her husband, Rick and Debbie VanAusdall, whom he thought of like a daughter, his granddaughter, Paul Crysler, and his wife, Jessica, and Sarah Deere, and her husband, Wesley, his great-grandchildren, Grace, Lilly, and Connor Sullivan, and Cruz, Clay, and Collin Crysler.
