Funeral services for Thomas Edwin Bruton, 77, of Hollandale will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 31, 2009, at Hollandale Baptist Church. He died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at his home after an extended illness. Burial will be in Hollandale Cemetery under the direction of Boone-Wells Funeral Home, Greenville.
Thomas was born May 31, 1932 in Braggadocio, MO the son of the late Michael Edwin Bruton and Tommie Waldrop Bruton. He graduated from Braggadocio High School and attended Mississippi State University after which he returned to Braggadocio and began his farming career. A short time later, he married Helen Mayo.
In 1965, Thomas and his family moved to Hollandale where he continued his farming. Several years later Thomas was joined by his three sons, son-in-law, and three grandsons in Bruton Farms Partnership.
He was a faithful member of Hollandale Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. Thomas loved his Sunday School class, The Leroy Caldwell Class where he participated in many "lively" discussions. Also, Thomas was one of the original founders and board members of the present-day Catfish Point Hunting Club. In 2004, he was named Washington County's Farmer of the Year at the annual Delta Ag Forum sponsored by the Federal Land Bank and WBAQ in Greenville.
Thomas' first wife passed away in 1992 and several years later, he married Barbara Evans Shackleford of Hollandale.
He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Barbara Bruton; one daughter, Teresa Bruton Henderson (George) of Hollandale; three sons, James Thomas Bruton (Gail), Greg Alan Bruton (Andrea) and Jeffrey Drew Bruton (Valerie), all of Hollandale; 18 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and two brothers, James Shirley Bruton of Caruthersville, MO and Gary Mack Bruton of Holland, MO. Thomas also leaves three step-daughters, Kimberly S. Cadenhead (Robert) of Starkville, Mary S. Stacy (Larry) of Jackson and Barbara S. Fontenot (Barry) of Hollandale.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and the mother of his children, Helen Bruton.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. tonight at Boone-Wells Funeral Home, Greenville. The Rev. Joseph Knight will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hollandale Baptist Church, P.O. Box 368, Hollandale, MS 38748 or Baptist Children's Village, P.O. Box 27, Clinton, MS 39060-0027.
