The death of Esther Elkins widow of Birket M. Elkins late of Wells County, Indiana, occurred at the home of her daughter in the village of Dillman, Wells county Indiana, August 22, 1897.
Deceased was a daughter of Nathaniel and Nancy Batson. She was born near Newcastle Henry county Indiana, December 27, 1834, and removed with her parents to Wells county Indiana in the month of January, 1837. The deceased was an exemplary wife and mother being unfortunate in her lifetime, having been left a widow three times. Her first marriage being to Lewis H. Colbert May 12, 1853. To this union there was born two sons and one daughter who survive her. Lonzo, Viola and Lewis H. Colbert jr., the former who located at Mt. Zion, Indiana engaged in the mercantile business and trustee of the township in which he resides. Viola wife of John W. Wilson a prosperous farmer located one mile west and north of Dillman. Lewis H. Colbert as a merchant in Balbec, Jay county Indiana. Her first husband, Lewis H. Colbert sr. having died and by his death she was left a widow at the age of 23 years. She was united in marriage to Samuel Good in 1862, to this union was born three daughters, Mary G., Nora E., and Lena E. Good, two of whom she survived, Lena E. having died in infancy, Nora E. widow of James Fix having died at the residence of her mother near Dillman, after a protracted illness and journey from Los Angeles, California, and Mary G. widow of Samuel W. Allen residing near Dillman, upon the death of her husband cared for her mother tenderly until death occurred. After the death of her second husband she was united in marriage to Birket M. Elkins.
In her death the children have lost a kind and affectionate mother; the neighbors a kind and helping friend, the community one worthy of example and esteem.
Funeral services were conducted at residence of deceased by Rev. Wm. Rea.
