He was preceded in death by his wife, Elva Russell Beard.
He is survived by three sisters, Mae Overstreet, Jean Divers, and Joyce Bowles; numerous nieces and nephews; greatnieces and nephews; and many friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December, 8, 2009, in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, with the Reverend Donald G. Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial tributes be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 2011 Brandon Ave., SW, Roanoke, Va. The Beard family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son, Salem, VA.
