Josef (Joseph) Eberhart was the first of eight children of Bavarian immigrants Francis Xavier and Maria Josephine Gebhardt Eberhart. He and sister Cecelia were born in Galena, IL; his other siblings were born in Dubuque, Iowa, to which the family moved about 1862. The 1870 census shows 11 year old Joseph in Dubuque, Ward 3, with his parents and five siblings; that census erroneously states he was born in Iowa. Cemetery records indicate that he died in 1875 and is buried in Section 2, near his parents and some of his siblings. His cause of death remains unknown.
