An immigrant from Germany (Bayern), Maria Josephine Gebhart married Francis Xavier Eberhart about 1858, the year of her arrival in America. It is not known whether the couple married in Germany before emigration or in the U.S., but they appear in the federal census of 1860 in Galena, Illinois with their first child, Josef, age 1. By 1865, they are in Dubuque, Iowa, where they remained. The 1870 census there shows them with six children and they were to have another daughter in 1871.

Josephine outlived her husband by 42 years. He died in 1872. In 1880. the widow keeps house for five of her children. The three older ones are working and the younger two are in school. Celia, age 19, is a seamstress; Frank, age 17, works in a wire shop, and Ludwig (Louis) is a painter. Otto, 12, and Mary, 8, are students.

In the census of 1900, Josephine lives with daughter Mary, age 28, in Dubuque. That census indicates Josephine has had 8 children, three of whom are by then no longer alive. Those who had died before then were: Josef (1875), Herman (before 1880), and an unknown infant. Mary is working as a machine operator to support herself and her 65 year old mother. Mary never married. Her sister Cäcilia (Celia) married Christian Tügel (Tuegel) in Dubuque on 29 Sept. 1881. Brother Frank married Louise Steible on 9 May 1888 in Dubuque. Otto (called Sam) married Wilhelmina (Minnie) Marsch on 17 Sept. 1902 in Dubuque. Ludwig (Louis) married Victoria Emma Schaaf on 8 Jan. 1907 in St.Paul, MN.

Josephine last appears in the Dubuque city directory of 1913 as the widow of Frank, living at 1227 Elm Street.

Cemetery records indicate that Josephine is buried in Section 2, where her husband and three of her children also lie.
