Amy Harriet Saunders Carter, 94, formerly of 7431 Sunset Lane, Stonington, entered eternal life Monday morning, March 22, 2010, at Marquette General Hospital.

Amy was born December 8, 1915 in Marquette, a daughter of Frederick and Harriet (Bahrman) Saunders. She was a 1932 graduate of the Graveraet High School and later received her teaching certification from Northern State Teacher’s College (now Northern Michigan University) in 1936. She was a charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Sorority for Women Teachers. As a member of the Methodist Church, she was active in the choir, teaching Sunday School and World Service Guild. She also enjoyed being a counselor at Michigamme Methodist Camp. On December 28, 1940, she married Fred David Carter at the First United Methodist Church in Marquette. Amy loved children, teaching and her career in education spanned over 30 years. Her teaching assignments included the L’Anse School System and later the Marquette Public Schools, teaching at the third and fourth grade levels, with a particular love and enjoyment of the years when she taught kindergarten. She was a member of MEA, NEA, & MARSP. She retired in 1975, but kept returning to the classroom as a volunteer, often assisting her daughter who teaches in the Marquette Public Schools. For many years, Amy and David belonged to the Great Lakes Cruising Club, a group that enjoyed boating along the waters. They were also among the founding members of the Marquette Yacht Club. During the winter months, Amy assisted David as the couple served as shipkeepers on ore boats for the American Steamship Company in Ashtabula, Ohio and Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. With all their travels, there was no place like home and Amy and David relished the time spent in Stonington with their family. Here, they were able to relax at their cottage, enjoying all that nature had to offer. Watching the deer, ducks, Sandhill Cranes, and feeding the birds were fulfilling pastimes. Amy was an avid reader and a staunch supporter of the Marquette County Humane Society.

Survivors include her husband of 70 years, F. David Carter; her daughter, Ann F. Carter; and son, Paul S. (Glenda) Carter both of Marquette; her grandchildren, Dianna K. (Franky) Dlugopolski, Christina L. Bruner, and Rebecca J. (Dean Turriff) Bruner, Manny (Jackie) Carter, Jason (Jill) Carter, Barry Carter, Larry (Lisa) Carter, and Heather Carter; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Amy was preceded in death by her brother, Francis “Buster” Saunders.

A private family memorial will be held.

Memorials may be directed to the Marquette County Humane Society, 84 Snowfield Road, Negaunee, MI 49866 or to a charity of the donor’s choice. The Swanson Funeral Home is serving the family.
