F. David Carter, 92, formerly of Stonington, entered eternal life Thursday morning, May 13, 2010, in the loving care of his family at Mather Nursing Center, Ishpeming.

David was born March 4, 1918 in Calumet, a son of Fred Gordan and Elizabeth (Richards) Carter. He was a 1936 graduate of the Graveraet High School in Marquette. Upon graduation he spent seven years working on ore boats in the Great Lakes working his way up from deckhand to wheelsman. On December 28, 1940 he married the former Amy Harriet Saunders at the First United Methodist Church. David’s working career continued with the City of Marquette in the diesel plant where he was employed as chief operator. In 1957 he graduated from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, he was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. David taught math and industrial arts classes at the Bishop Baraga High School, a position he held for thirteen years. After the school closed David became a realtor. He owned and operated the Carter Agency for sixteen years.

David was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting at his deer camp and was a member of the Deer Track Bow Hunter’s Club. David and Amy both shared a love of the water and enjoyed cruising the Great Lakes. They were among the founding members of the Marquette Yacht Club, where David was Commodore for several years, he also served as Port Captain of the Great Lakes Cruising Club at the Presque Isle Marina. In his retirement years David worked for the American Steamship Company during the winter months as a ship keeper in Ashtabula, Ohio and Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. With all their other adventures David and Amy loved their home on the Stonington Peninsula over looking Bay de Noc and watching the ships. David enjoyed spending time with family and friends, feeding wildlife, and working on projects in his woodshop.

Survivors included; his daughter, Ann F. Carter; and son, Paul S. (Glenda) Carter both of Marquette; his grandchildren, Dianna K. (Franky) Dlugopolski, Christina L. Bruner, and Rebecca J. (Dean Turriff) Bruner, Manny (Jackie) Carter, Jason (Jill) Carter, Barry Carter, Larry (Lisa) Carter, and Heather Carter; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Amy, on March 22, 2010; and by his brother, Paul T. Carter.

A private family memorial will be held. Memorials may be directed to the Marquette County Humane Society, 84 Snowfield Road, Negaunee, MI 49866 or to the Marquette Maritime Museum, 300 North Lakeshore Boulevard, Marquette, MI 49855 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
