A former Marinette County Sheriff Department Captain and State Representative for Marinette and Florence Counties from 1968-1972, William "Bill" Gerare LaFave, 87, passed away Thursday, Oct. 20.

Born Sept. 29, 1929 in Kingsford, Mi., to William and Florence (Beauchamp) LaFave, he graduated from Kingsford High School in 1947 and served in the United States Navy. After service, he attended Green Bay Business School, where, he met Shirley Ann Germain and they married in 1953.

A 1961 graduate of Wisconsin State Patrol Academy, he served two years as a security officer at the Green Bay Reformatory and five years with the State Patrol. He was elected Niagara Village Grand Marshal and was a Captain of the Marinette County Sheriff's Department.

He was also elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly as State Representative for Marinette and Florence Counties from 1968-1972. He founded and managed Triton Products with his wife and son, Gary.

His love for adventure led him to move the family to the Western Slope in Colorado for life as a ranch hand and also worked toward his real estate license. In 1974, the family returned to Green Bay, where he taught Police Science at NWTI and then began work as a sales rep and draftsman for Consolidated Construction.

With the help of his family, he ran a dairy farm in Oconto County the summer of 1976, and then a 9-hole golf course (Royal Oaks) in rural Waupaca County from 1976 to 1979.

He sought to find a way to not only make money to care for his family, he desired to find a way to care for God's people. In 1979, he became an AODA family counselor and worked at Garvey Hall in Appleton. From there, he and his wife were invited to serve as house parents at Shalom House in Green Bay. He then took a job as a family counselor at Our Lady of Charity (Eudes Family Programs) and was instrumental in the development of the therapeutic foster care program.

After "retiring", at 62, the couple with their daughter-in-law, Brenda, and their son, Ronald, founded an Interim Healthcare franchise in Green Bay. He began serving at Freedom House, a family homeless shelter and the couple attended Biblical Counseling Institute and Life Skills International training together and then facilitated classes for Freedom Life Skills.

At age 79, he received his pastoral ordination and co-founded Renewed Life Counseling Ministries to bring peace and comfort to families and individuals who were in need of restoration by prayerfully bringing them into alignment with God's Word.

He is survived by a sister Dorothy Verboncouer;
sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Betty and Ron Higgins and Diane and Robert Walczak;
10 children: Gary (Karla Franz), Lori (Dan) Nichols, Ronald (Amy Tijan), Richard (Brenda Schmid), Mary Jo (Dan) Wanty, Michael, Daniel, Diane "DeDe" (Dave) Gibbs, Ann (Steve) Henning and Robert (Jackie Wendt);
32 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, with two on the way and many dear relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Adolph and Mabel (Dappern) Germain; his wife Shirley Ann; a sister Mabel Tittyung; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley Mae and Joe Van Hout; brother-in-law, Marold "Bud" Verboncouer; Shirley's sister and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Roger Wesely, Jesse (Betty) Hollingsworth and John (Betty) Yurisic.
