Son of William McCormick and Lucinda Brumfield. Gordon sere in Company I, 22nd Kentucky Regiment Infantry from October 1, 1861 until January 20, 1865 when he mustered out in Louisville, Kentucky. He fought in many major battles including the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi under General Sherman. That siege was a major victory for the Union and gave the Union control of the Mississippi River. Upon returning from the war, he married Martha Ray. In order to battle Martha's consumption, Gordon and Martha as well as Gordon's parents and family moved to New Canada, Minnesota. Martha died in Minnesota and Gordon returned to Carter County where he married Elizabeth Smith and returned with her to Minnesota. In 1893, Gordon and his family moved back to Carter County and he took possession of his farm. Elizabeth died in 1901. On April 4, 1910, Gordon married Nancy Stephens of Ohio. Upon his death, Nancy returned to Ohio and was awarded his Civil War pension. Regretfully, Gordon died of a fractured skull caused by a kick to his head by a mule. Gordon and his family moved to Ramsey County, Minnesota where they lived for a number of years. He and Martha had three children: Nancy, Henry, and Larkin. Gordon and Elizabeth were the parents of Mary, John, George, Rosa, Lewis, Martha, Amie, Lucinda, Elmer, and Hobart. He and Nancy did not have any children.
