The son of William Gatewood Crittenden and Mary Thomas Crittenden enlisted with the Black Horse Cavalry on 25 May 1861. He was wounded and captured in May of 1862 at Williamsburg and held at Fort Monroe as a prisoner. After the War, he and his wife, Adelaide Eustace, had two sons, John Eustace and George William.
