Audrey B. McCaig, 80, Topeka, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at a Topeka hospital. Miss McCaig was a humanitarian and served as the executive director of the Helping Hands Humane Shelter for 24 years. She retired in 1992. She earlier had worked in accounting for several firms in downtown Topeka, including Adams Business Forms, the Kansas Medical Society, Carl Ossmann and Associates and American Yearbook. She was recognized locally as an advocate of responsible pet ownership and made televised appearances with shelter animals pleading to residents to find them a home. Helping Hands Humane Society named a new shelter in her honor on Oct. 6, 1974. She was appointed director emeritus of the shelter in July 1992 by the HHHS board of directors, and former Gov. Joan Finney appointed her to the Kansas Board of Veterinary Examiners for a four-year term, also in July 1992. She was born Oct. 9, 1920, in Centralia, the daughter of William Harris McCaig and Edna May Grisby. She graduated from Topeka High School and Strickler's and Clark's Business Schools. She lived most her life in Topeka. Miss McCaig was a member of Central Congregational Church. She also spent many volunteer hours with her dog, "Clover," visiting Medical I and II at Brewster Place. Survivors include a sister, Evelyn M. McCaig, Topeka. Miss McCaig was cremated. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Mount Hope Mausoleum Chapel. Inurnment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.
