Cleta B. Brewer
June 06, 1927 - June 10, 2019

Cleta B. Brewer of Mars Hill, joined the alto section of Heaven’s choir on June 10, 2019.

Cleta was born June 6, 1927 in Itawamba County to Reverend B.O. and Minnie Funderburk, welcomed by 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Music has always been a gift to Cleta enjoyed. Cleta and her sister, Juanita would sing specials in church before they were five years old. They moved several times as her father was Mississippi State Overseer for the Church of God, and the Funderburks shared their music everywhere they went.

Cleta graduated from Europa High School. She married Robert (Bob) Brewer of Mars Hill and they were blessed with two daughters. Cleta worked at the Superintendent of Education’s office in Pike County and later with Miss Annie Andrews in the Amite County office. Her book-keeping skills recorded perfect state audits annually. After retiring there, she and Bob owned and operated Lakeview Golf Club in Summit for several years.

She was a 65 year member of the Mars Hill Baptist Church and sang alto with the talented Mars Hill Choir. Her chocolate pies and chicken dressing will be missed at potlucks and revivals. She was a gifted artist, many of her paintings are in homes and business across the US. She authored two unpublished books and numerous songs for her band, The Mars Hill Kickers. She had a great sense of humor!

She loved being a mom, a Nana, gifted cook and musician. She enjoyed traveling (some), John Wayne movies and Elvis! Mostly, she just loved being home.

Cleta is preceded in death by her parents: Rev B.O. and Minnie (Barton) Funderburk, her husband, Bob, three tall brothers: Noah (Vivian), Ezra (Norma), and Ben (Mary Annis) and three sisters, Jewel (Dale), Juanita (L.T.) and Imogene.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Linda of Brandon, and Kathy (Henry) Edmonson of Starkville, a grand-daughter Molly, and a grand-dog Ruskey, several nieces and nephews and a host of neighbors who loved “Miss Cleta”.

The family wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Mars Hill Community, Liberty Community Living Center staff, Angels Work Here sitting service, Compassus Hospice, and Dr. Henry Lewis for their loving care, especially in the last chapter of her sweet life.

A visitation for Cleta will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2019 from 2 PM until services at 3 PM at Mars Hill Baptist Church. Bro. Clay Campbell will be officiating and burial will be at Mars Hill Cemetery.

To honor Cleta’s life, please consider memorials to Mars Hill Baptist Church or daughter Linda’s Mother’s Grace Animal Sanctuary (PO Box 1482, Brandon, MS 39043) or Crosspoint Church, 903 Stark Rd, Starkville, MS 39759. God bless.
