A native of Cleveland County, NC; son of the late Charles Sims Atkins (1919–1999) and Geneva Edmondson Atkins (1924–2012); husband of the late Willie V "Cookie" Atkins (1948–2011) for 31 years.
Proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a Staff Sargent in the US Army where he received the Purple Heart, was a life member in the Purple Heart Society and the DAV Chapter 18, was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, and loved working in his yard.
Also preceded in death by his brothers Jimmy Atkins, Larry Atkins, and Ronnie Atkins; and special nephew, Derek Hamrick.
Survived by his son, Keith Edmondson (Robin); daughter Bonnie Edmondson; sisters, Roseann Green, Brenda Atkins Hamrick (1957–2021), and Becky Atkins; brothers, Johnny Atkins (Linda) and Randy "Butch" Atkins (1959–2022); six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, especially Lisa.
The family received friends from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, Sunday, June 9, 2019.
The funeral service was held at 11:00 am, Monday, June 10, 2019, in the chapel of Clay-Barnette with Dr. J Eric Davis officiating; burial at Cleveland Memorial Park with military honors.
