Born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire in 1875, son of John G Chambers 1853-1940 and Emma Chambers (nee Wale) 1850-1896. His name at birth was in fact John George Chambers (birth registration; CHAMBERS, JOHN GEORGE mothers maiden name-WALE
GRO Reference: 1875 S Quarter in WORKSOP Volume 07B Page 24)
though for reasons unknown (possibly as his father and two cousins were also called John), he seems to use the name George. The Chambers family arrived in the USA on the 'Bothnia' on 19/4/1889.

In 1901 he is in 1901 in Manhattan as George, he is single and a Policeman. He married Ida Welch at some point between 1901 and 1903 and the couple had three children;
John Chambers b1903, Lockport
George Charles b1906, Lockport
Phyliss Jessie b1907, Lincoln, UK.

It's possible the couple had two further children, twins Marie and Annie born 18/5/1904. A US Consular Registration Certificate (issued in Nottingham, England) notes they remained in the US . The document records his name simply as George Chambers and that he had returned to Lincoln with Ida on 19/7/1907 for the purpose of improving his health . The 1911 UK Census in Lincoln, again in the name George Chambers records his occupation as a Police Pensioner. The household includes George, Ida May and three children John, George and Phyliss. Travel and migration records note 'George', Ida May and the three children returning to the US arriving 30/7/1912. By the 1915 census Ida is shown as widow.
