Chris died from injuries suffered when he attempted to stop a Lansing Bank robbery. He was shot in the head when he went to the aid of a bank robbery victim outside the Bank of Lansing branch, two doors from the D & C Store where he was a manager.

Posthumously, Chris was the recipient of the Robert P. Connelly Medal for Heroism Award.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen (Wernet) Castle and three sons, twins, Brian and Chad, and Shawn; his parents, Henry H. and Fannie L. Smith Castle of Stockbridge. Five brothers, James (Ruth) Castle of Leslie, Henry Jr., Rev. Robert(Debra) Castle, Donald Castle and John (Debbie) Castle all of Stockbridge, two sisters, Norma Munn of Lansing and Loretta (Dave) Sherfield of Coldwater.

He was preceded in death by a sister, infant Bobbie Jean Castle.
