John was the youngest of ten children born to Joseph and Mary
(Bonard) Waln. He was born in Frederick Co, VA where his father had a 200 acre
farm "on the drains of Isaac's Creek", in northern Frederick County on or near
the Morgan County line. It was later said that he owned a "large and valuable
estate" with a large frame farmhouse in which he kept a tavern for many years.
It was located at the cross-roads of Pack-horse and Winchester Rd. in Frederick
Co. VA. The Walns came from a long line of Quakers who came to America with
William Penn in 1682 and settled in Pennsylvania.
